The implementation of the phase shift keying technique is well known in the prior art as evidenced by U.S. Pat. No. 3,518,300. It is also known that such a system requires a modulating and demodulating circuit which comprises a pair of waveforms whose phase relationships are controlled by the data bits to be transmitted. In the prior art, phase shift keying is implemented in a signal in which the carrier signal is offset in time by one half of a data bit, or a bit period, from the carrier signal in the absence of a phase shift. In a typical situation, the center carrier signal is used and the two signals in the odd and even cycles are offset from the center carrier signal by one half of a bit period. It is also known in the prior art that the demodulation of the phase shift keying modulation is accomplished by utilizing a demodulator which compares the amplitude of the demodulated signal in the presence of the phase shift with the amplitude of the demodulated signal in the absence of the phase shift. In the past, the demodulation of the phase shift keying signal in a multi-carrier signal was accomplished by the application of a synchronous demodulator circuit. In such a system, the two signals in the even and odd cycles are compared against each other. Such a comparison is made in a single carrier case, and is also made in the multi-carrier case by utilizing a sampling circuit which enables the two carriers to be compared against each other.
